The Philosophical Research Society, legendary Los Angeles puppetry treasure The Bob Baker Marionette Theater and the masters of misfit toys at stop-motion studio Screen Novelties are getting in the spirit (a little early!) with a merry matinee of live puppetry and festive films!
The Bob Baker Marionettes will come to life for a very special preview of their timeless classic, BOB BAKER’S NUTCRACKER – one of the theater's most beloved shows since its opening in 1969! The talented troupe will perform selections from Baker’s thrilling adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s yuletide ballet (in advance of its month-long run at The Sierra Madre Theater). Meet the Sugarplum Fairy and her promenading cakes! Dance with the waltzing flowers! Cheer for the Nutcracker band, the Go-Gos!
Then! Stick around as we bask in a wondrous winter wonderland of deep cut film ephemera co-curated by the puppetry and animation “heads” at Screen Novelties! Warm n’ whimsical animated shorts from around the globe! Vintage television special clips! A cavalcade of classic characters! Antique adverts! All this and much more will dance before your eyes in this one-of-a-kind, lovingly compiled mix of movie merriment!

The Philosophical Research Society is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit arts and events organization, founded in 1934 as a repository of multicultural wisdom sources and a center of arts and learning. Its mission is to provide a public arts venue and research library for as wide a range of creative and intellectual pursuits as possible, for as diverse and inclusive an audience as possible. PRS’s particular focus is on the intersection between the creative arts and metaphysics, philosophy, mythology and mysticism.
ABOUT SCREEN NOVELTIES
Screen Novelties was formed in 2003 by Mark Caballero, Seamus Walsh, and Christopher Finnegan with the goal of bringing the whimsy and dynamism of classic cartoons into the realm of stop motion animation. We have a studio in Los Angeles full of fabric, feathers, foam, and glitter. Screen Novelties is also home to a talented circle of freelance animators, sculptors, designers, photographers, and digital artists.
Past and current clients include Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney, Nike, Hallmark, FOX, and Paramount.
